Description
A simple yet flavorful marinara sauce that brings family traditions to the table, perfect for any pasta dish.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1 onion (finely chopped)
- 3 cloves garlic (chopped)
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 2 cans (15 ounces each) whole peeled tomatoes
- 1 cup water
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon salt (or more to taste)
- 2 twists of black pepper
- 10 fresh basil leaves
Instructions
- Finely chop the onion and crush the garlic cloves.
- In a large pot, add the two cans of whole peeled tomatoes and rinse the cans with 1 cup of water, adding that to the pot as well. You can chop the tomatoes with scissors, crush them by hand, or use an immersion blender for the desired texture.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil in a large skillet. Add the chopped onion and sauté over medium heat for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add the chopped garlic and red pepper flakes, sautéing for another minute.
- Stir in the tomatoes along with the dried oregano, salt, and black pepper twists. Cook over medium heat for 15-20 minutes until the desired consistency is reached.
- One minute before turning off the heat, stir in the chopped basil leaves. Taste and adjust salt as necessary to finish your marinara sauce.
Notes
For a spicy kick, increase the red pepper flakes. If the sauce is too acidic, add a teaspoon of sugar to balance it out. This sauce can also be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week or frozen for later use.
